6 May » Alfred Subietas, a secondary school student at the Escola Pia in Sarrià and author of the research article Arquitectura bioclimàtica: estudi i proposta d'aïllament tèrmic d'un edifici d'oficines. His research has been selected in the Fifth Young Research Show for Sarrià-Sant Gervasi that was held at the UPC on 30 April.

15 April » Kevin Cerdà, telecommunication engineer, specialized in Sound and Vision, coursed the Master in Creation and Development of Videogames at the UPC School of Professional & Executive Development. He founded the study "BeautiFun Games" and his first game was awarded as the best videogame in the Digital Generation Awards 2012.

12 december » Maria Pau Ginebra, director of the Biomaterials division of the UPC’s Biomedical Engineering Research Centre (CREB), oversees the project on avascular necrosis treatment funded by La Marató 2011, an annual telethon broadcast by Televisió de Catalunya and the Fundació La Marató de TV3 to raise funds for scientific research into diseases that are currently incurable.

8 October » Judit Calveras’s “Santa Maria de Puigcerdà, 75 anys sense l’església” has received the Catalan Women’s Institute award for the best upper secondary school project by a girl or group of girls in the framework of the 13th edition of the UPC award for upper secondary school research and higher training cycle (CFGS) projects. She is now starting a degree in Architecture at the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB).


1 October » Ivan Riba is studying architecture at the ETSAB and working on his final thesis project. He has been a singer in the Architecture Choir since 2008. The UPC has four choirs: the Terrassa Campus Choir, the Mediterranean Technology Park Choir, the Architecture Choir and the Gaudeamus Choir.


25 september » Barbara Liskov , professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), was awarded an honorary doctoral degree by the UPC at the inauguration ceremony for the 2012-2013 academic year.


21 september » Professor Lluís Torner, a lecturer and researcher at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) and director of the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), associated research centre, delivered the opening speech of the La Mercè festival in the Saló de Cent, Barcelona City Hall at 7 p.m. on 21 September.


12 september » Gemma Abant has recently graduated from the EET with a degree in Telecommunications Engineering. She successfully combined her studies with the practice of mountain bike trials, a sport in which she has been world champion eight times.


3 September » Se-Bel Lee Yun studies Chemical Engineering at the ETSEIB and is working on his final thesis. He has created a self-diagnosis kit for the early detection of breast cancer. The kit has been distinguished at the Second UPC Emprèn Competition as one of this year’s best business ideas.


30 July » Andrea and Luis, who are studying for the master's degree in Agriculture for Development, have taken part in a cooperation project funded by the UPC’s Centre for Development Cooperation in Mozambique. The project is intended to increase opportunities for trading and processing grain, a basic resource in one of the country’s poorest regions.


23 July » Oscar Rivero, a student at the CFIS, will be taking the double bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics and Mathematics. His mark in the university entrance examination was the highest in Spain.

2 July » Cristina Urdiales has won the Prize for the Best Doctoral Thesis in ICT Accessibility and Personal Autonomy, awarded by the Vodafone Spain Foundation. The thesis, entitled Collaborative Assistive Robot for Mobility ENhancement (CARMEN) was supervised by Ulises Cortés of the Department of Software within the UPC’s doctorate in Artificial Intelligence.


25 June » Jordi Aymerich has just graduated from the EET with a diploma in Mechanical Engineering. His final thesis, classed as the best in Catalonia for the 2010-2011 academic year by the Association of Technical Industrial Engineers of Barcelona (CETIB), demonstrates the technical feasibility of manufacturing a new biocomposite material using chicken feathers.


18  June » Ha Nan is a student at the Beijing Institute of Technology. She is studying at the ETSETB for 6 months thanks to the UPC-Banco Santander China Incoming grants programme.


11 June » Josep Marc Mingot is a student at the Interdisciplinary Higher Education Centre (CFIS). He lives at the Pere Felip Monlau halls of residence, in the Raval neighbourhood of Barcelona.


4 June » María and Marta, two students at the Vallès School of Architecture, have spent 10 days in LOW3, an energy self-sufficient prototype house.


29 May » Albert Gràcia, Architecture student at the Barcelona School of Architecture. Albert has won the 9th UPC Folder Design Competition with the design "13 moves".


21 May » Sandra Troyano and Nàdia Tolós, Industrial Engineering students at the ETSEIB, have programmed the small humanoid robot Dorami, designed by the HumanoidLab at the Institute of Robotics and Industrial Informatics, to go up and down stairs and get around obstacles. The students have won various competitions in the field of robotics.


14 may » The ETSEIAT’s hybrid racing car ecoR2 came third in the Formula Hybrid International Competition, which was held from 30 April to 4 May at the New Hampshire racetrack in Boston, USA.


30 April » Daniel Calvo is studying for the degree in Mining Engineering and the master’s degree in Natural Resource Engineering at the EPSEM and is on a scholarship at the Valentí Masachs Geology Museum, where he demonstrates the usefulness and importance of minerals and raises awareness of the need to respect nature and the environment.


16 April » Aina Frau is studying for the degree in Telecommunications Engineering at the ETSETB. She is currently working on her final thesis, on the topic of improving reliability in gathering brain connectivity data from magnetic resonance images, at the company Transmural Biotech.


2 April » Gerard Martínez is studying for the Diploma in Naval Architecture at the Barcelona School of Nautical Studies. Gerard is visually impaired, and his dedication and perseverance mean he is successfully working towards his graduation.


19 March » Alba, Pau and Laia, 5th grade students from the Sagrada Família School in Santa Coloma de Gramenet. On 7th February they visited the UPC to take part in the Universitat dels Nens i Nenes (Children's University), an initiative to bring science and technology closer to kids.


5 March » Àngel Cerezo and Xabier del Arco, recent graduates in Architecture by the ETSAV and the ETSAB, respectively. Their final thesis have been awarded by the ONCE Foundation for its handling of accessibility.
