What is the ECTS?

ECTS stands for European Credit Transfer System and is the standard adopted by all the universities of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) to guarantee the homogeneity and the quality of the studies on offer.

In the present model, one credit is equivalent to 10 hours of class time, whereas an ECTS credit considers, in addition to the class time, all the academic activities carried out during the course (hours of study, completion of assignments and practical work).

What is the duration of a Master’s Degree course?

During one academic year of full time study (two fourth month periods between September and July), the total number of ECTS credits available is 60. 

Depending on the previous studies of the student and the particular program concerned, a master’s degree courses contain between 60 and 120 taught ECTS credits. Therefore a Master’s Degree course will take one or two academic years to complete.


How much does it cost to study a Master’s Degree?

The price of a Master’s Degree is fixed by the Generalitat of Catalonia, within the limits established for higher education by the national government. The course fees for the 2007/2008 academic year are 28,67 € per credit ECTS.


What grants or scholarships are available for students of master’s degree courses?

  • Scholarships for students of master’s degree courses of the Ministry of Education and Science
  • Scholarships for master’s degree courses awarded by the Department of Education, Universities and research of the Basque local government
  • Scholarships for research students
  • Scholarships for training of university academic staff
  • Scholarships for training of research students
  • Alban scholarships
  • Scholarships for exchange programs within the Master’s Degree framework
  • Scholarships awarded by the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation (Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional)


  • What are academic regulations of the Master’s Degree program?

    The academic regulations of the Master’s Degree program of the UPC are approved by the university management before the start of each academic year.


    How can I homologate my previous studies?

    The department in charge of the master’s program, via delegation of the rector will manage requests for homologation.
    It is necessary to complete an application form and give it to the head of department together with the following documentation:

  • A copy or the original certificate of the qualification to homologate. This is only required if the qualification was not awarded by the UPC.
  • The course program of the qualification to homologate.  This should include detailed information about the subjects studied and should be published by the institution where the qualification was obtained. This is only required if the qualification was not awarded by the UPC.
  • Proof of payment of the necessary homologation fees.

  • What are “Erasmus Mundus” master’s courses?

    Erasmus Mundus is an EU program which was launched in 2003. Its objectives are to improve the quality of higher education in Europe and to gain the cooperation of other countries in order to attract highly qualified students from these countries to courses in European universities.   It is hoped that the result is an improved relationship between similar educational establishments throughout the world.

    Registration: From 3rd to 5th October 2007

    Pre-enrolment period for the UPC master's degrees is regulated by this academic calendar. Within this general period, every master program can fix its own schedule.

    Spring term: From 31th January to 15th February 2008


  • Terms to present the applications of validation
  • Winter quarter: During July and September 2007
    Spring quarter: From the 1st of December to the 15th of January 2008


  • Terms to request studies continuity- Non suitable for students who show a low performance in the 1st academic year
  • Non suitable for students who show a low performance in the 1st academic year of the 2007-2008 winter quarter.
    Non suitable for students who show a low performance in the 1st academic year of the 2007-2008 spring quarter.
