Interdisciplinary Higher Education Centre
One of the main objectives of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. BarcelonaTech (UPC) is to offer a high-quality education that respond to the needs of its area of influence. In recent years, the UPC has made a substantial effort to incentivise this quality by updating its curricula, promoting innovation in teaching and expanding the range of resources offered to lecturers. The ongoing challenge that the UPC must meet is to offer a high-quality education with an interdisciplinary focus.

The experience gained from the double degree in Telecommunications Engineering and Mathematics launched several years ago has demonstrated that there is a rising demand for double-degree programmes from high-performing students and that graduates of this degree have excellent career opportunities because they can meet specific demands for highly-trained professionals. On the basis of this experience, the UPC has consolidated its reputation for organising and undertaking high-quality multidisciplinary studies in scientific and technological fields.

The aim of the Interdisciplinary Higher Education Centre (CFIS) is to increase the number of programmes of this nature that may be attractive to highly motivated and talented students from around Spain, who will have the opportunity to take one or more of the official degrees that are currently offered at the UPC and also be awarded a UPC-specific degree.

School of Mathematics and Statistics
The School of Mathematics and Statistics (FME) first offered a course of study leading to an undergraduate degree in Mathematics in the 1992–1993 academic year. In the same academic year, the School began offering a bachelor’s degree in Statistics, previously offered by the Barcelona School of Informatics since the 1990–1991 academic year.

The FME knows how to take advantage of its small size. Some 500 students are currently enrolled at the School. Most of its teaching staff also have teaching appointments at other UPC schools, a fact that benefits students since it readily establishes links between the School and the fields of engineering and technology, and attracts highly specialised teaching staff. The School has three computer rooms, a library, and a study room that is open permanently, including weekends and public holidays. A cafeteria and photocopying services are also available.

Bachelor's theses are designed to strengthen student contact with the professional world. Educational cooperation agreements enable students to benefit from work placement in companies and institutions during their final years of study. The job bank is open to companies, students and graduates of the FME. Last year, the job bank offered over 60 jobs.

The School participates in international student exchanges through the Socrates Erasmus and Sicue Seneca programmes, along with other smaller-scale programmes. The FME currently has cooperative agreements with other Spanish, European and South American universities. An agreement has also been signed with the Grenoble Institute of Technology to allow students to obtain a double degree in Mathematics and Ingénieur INPG/ENSIMAG.

Barcelona School of Telecommunications Engineering
The Barcelona School of Telecommunications Engineering (ETSETB), also known as Telecom BCN, is located on the North Campus of the UPC, a modern, dynamic and easily accessible campus. The Campus houses the Rector Gabriel Ferraté Library and a number of useful services such as the Social Activities Service, a sports centre and shops.

Courses are taught with a high level of experimentation in the School's 36 fully equipped teaching laboratories, which are renovated every year. In addition, the School hosts leading research laboratories with anechoic chambers, a reverberation chamber, a clean room and a smart room. The Campus also hosts MareNostrum, one of the most powerful computers in Europe.

At Telecom BCN you will have the opportunity to study abroad at one of the 91 universities with leading programmes in the field of telecommunications with which the School has exchange agreements. You can also take advantage of the agreements on double degrees that Telecom BCN has reached with 19 prestigious universities. Every year, some 140 students benefit from a wide variety of exchange opportunities. In addition, you can take up paid work placement at one of the 155 companies with which 625 cooperation agreements have been signed.

The School has pioneered the adaptation of its degree programmes to the European Higher Education Area with the implementation of the Master of Science in Information and Communication Technologies (MINT). A double degree in Telecommunications Engineering and Mathematics is another pioneering option for students who are interested in this double profile.

At Telecom BCN, students can enjoy a rich university life in an active, socially aware, multicultural setting; one of its best-known events is the Telecogresca party. You will have the opportunity to channel your volunteering, social and cultural concerns by joining one of the many associations at the School, which often enhance academic training by promoting organisational skills. AESS, ArtRàdio, AUCOOP, AVED, BJT, BEST, Buran, the Telecos Sports Club, Distorsió, Engineers Without Borders, IEEE, IAESTE, Sinvergüenza SVGA, Sound Workshop, VGA, WAFAE and the Telecommunications Students Association (DAT), which groups together the student representatives who take part in the governing bodies of the School and the UPC, are some such associations.
