Cooperation and solidarity

Development cooperation at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) is the result of the efforts of the university community. There are many ways to take part: with a charitable gesture such as subscribing to the 0.7% campaign or in a more active manner by participating in the UPC’s development cooperation groups and associations or in specific development cooperation projects. As a student, you may also decide to focus your bachelor’s thesis on topics related to cooperation, extend your knowledge by taking subjects and courses on cooperation or take the master's degree in Technology for Human Development and Cooperation.
The University’s commitment to cooperation development is expressed through information and education, collaboration and cooperation. Through the Centre for Development Cooperation (CCD) , students, lecturers and administrative staff propose activities that place their scientific and technical knowledge and skills at the service of human development, with the ultimate aim of achieving a more open, equitable, sustainable and compassionate society.
The 0,7% campaign
As a student, you can participate in this campaign by ticking the 0.7% box on your enrolment form. As a lecturer, researcher or administrative employee, you can donate 0.7% of your salary or make a one-off donation. The UPC itself donates 0.7% of its income for agreements.
Development cooperation groups at the UPC
The cooperation groups at the UPC, which include students, lecturers and researchers, and administrative staff from the UPC’s schools, organise awareness-raising initiatives, workshops and activities and work on development cooperation projects with their counterparts in the South.
Education and awareness raising
As a student, you can get involved in development cooperation by taking related subjects, by linking your bachelor’s thesis to a cooperation project or by participating in charitable activities. You can also take the master's degree in Technology for Human Development and Cooperation or write your doctoral thesis on science and technology for development cooperation. You can also take part in activities that raise awareness of conditions in the South.
Development cooperation projects
The figures for the 2011-2012 academic year are as follows: 64 projects have been carried out in 32 countries, and 256 people have participated. These field projects in which members of the university community are involved take place largely thanks to the contributions received from the 0.7% campaign. The CCD channels these resources in its annual call for grant applications ..
Research
At the UPC, many research groups touch on development cooperation in their work. It also produces theses on science and technology for development, as well as publications and articles on research related to this topic.
