The UPC has secured the highest number of Erasmus Mundus master’s degrees awarded by the European Union (EU). From the 2010-2011 academic year, students will be able to choose to study on one of the seven European Erasmus Mundus double master’s degrees, which will be run in a framework of collaboration between a consortium of European universities.

This concession places the UPC in a privileged position amongst the 224 universities in 51 EU and non-EU countries that, as quality universities, have been given approval to teach these joint programs.

Of a total of 50 approved Erasmus Mundus master’s degrees, the UPC has outstripped other European universities such as the University of Groningen (6), the KTH Royal Institute of Technology (6), Lund University (5), the University of Gant (4), Helsinki University of Technology (3), the University of Vienna (2), the Federal Technical University of Zurich (2), the Dublin Institute of Technology (2), and the Catholic University of Louvain (2).

A country-by-country breakdown shows that 25 Erasmus Mundus master’s degrees have been awarded to Spanish universities. Other countries that also obtained a high number of master’s degrees in this call include Germany (31), France (26), Italy (22), Sweden (22) the Netherlands (17), Belgium (14), the United Kingdom (11), Finland (7), and Ireland (6).

The following seven master’s degrees have been awarded to the UPC:
  • European Master in Agricultural, Food and Environmental Policy Analysis
  • Data Mining and Knowledge Management
  • Photonics Engineering, Nanophotonics and Biophotonics
  • Euro Hydroinformatics and Water Management [Renewal]
  • Environomical Pathways for Sustainable Energy Systems
  • Distributed Computing
  • Master of Science in Research on Information and Communication Technologies [Renewal]

Erasmus Mundus is an EU program approved in 2003 whose purpose is to improve the quality of higher education in Europe. It likewise seeks to establish links with other geographical areas to encourage highly qualified students from third countries to join courses that are run jointly with European universities. The ultimate aim is to strengthen the relations between likeminded institutions around the world.

In 2008, the program extended its scope to include doctoral studies and the UPC has thus obtained approval for two Erasmus Mundus doctoral programs. The UPC has also obtained approval for four projects within the Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window program in which UPC is considered as an associate university, and an ATLANTIS project for educational cooperation between universities in the EU and the US.
