Aquaculture is expanding at an accelerating pace globally, but the big step forward will come when the sector is able to produce intensively in small spaces, optimize facilities, reduce the ecological impact of the activity, and control the waste products generated. In addition to producing food, aquaculture is expected to supply other markets in the future.

The sea is a world full of sounds: those produced by waves, rain and earthquakes, and those emitted by marine organisms. But the natural balance of this ecosystem is under threat due to the introduction of artificial sound sources. For many years, UPC-Barcelona Tech’s Bioacoustic Applications Laboratory (LAB) has been using its knowledge and experience to help control the danger posed by this form of pollution.

Hideo Tamamoto, a researcher at Akita University in Japan, has devised a new method for capturing body movements and digitizing them in 3D. The system, which is being applied in the field of dance, generates a code that can be used to create a “dance score.” The method has led to the development of a learning system that digitally represents the movements that need to be executed by students, who receive instruction from a virtual teacher. Video game controllers and manga-style avatars help convey the delicate movements of traditional Japanese dance to new generations.

Higher education in Europe is going through times of profound change following the establishment of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). Many questions have been raised and others are beginning to be answered, so a certain amount of time is needed to take stock of its progress. This is the theory espoused by Hanne Smidt, a senior advisor at the European University Association and an official spokesperson for the EHEA, who discussed her views on universities in the context of Europe.
