What is Catalonia?

Catalonia lies in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula. It has a surface area of 32,000 square kilometres and a population of over six million. Its history, its language (Catalan) and its own particular cultural, political and legal tradition have together given it its own personality and identity. Today Catalonia is an autonomous community within Spain, with its own government: the Generalitat.
