Furthermore, it represents an opportunity to keep in touch with technological trends in the maritime area, not only for students with a nautical degree, but also for those with degrees in related disciplines .", "anteced"=>"The need to develop its own doctoral programme appeared for the first time in 1991, when the now called 'Faculty of Nautical Studies' became part of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and the Department of Nautical Science and Engineering was created.

In fact, there was already a theoretical scientific base as well as research activities, since there were merchant mariners working on different maritime areas of research. Therefore, it was appropriate to establish our own research profile by means of a specific programme.

Apart from the above, there were other reasons to be taken into account:

- The need to establish a doctoral programme which would allow the access to graduates on Civil Marine
- The settlement of specific research procedures for the maritime sector and especially for waterborne transport - To promote university interrelations with other research lines.
- To develop appropriate courses adapted to real necessities of the sea industry and state of the art.", "justif"=>"The scope of study and research in the fields of nautical science and engineering has its own special features which are not shared by any other doctoral programme of the UPC. There is not any other programme in which such diversity of disciplines are combined: marine engines, material resistance, ship theory, meteorology, law, navigation, astronomy, safety, economics, transport, etc. Nevertheless, research in the maritime field requires the synchronization of experts in the different fields involved and, therefore, the research works, although will be centred in quite concrete areas, might embody and blend different disciplines.

Maritime transport has nowadays great importance in the economics of a state such a Spain, not only because it is the main transportation means, but also due to the relevant influence of port areas, which affect significantly the development of national economy, the great capitals which the industry involves and, also, the risks implied (the 'Prestige' case).

In the last years, professionals of Civil Marine are being increasingly involved in posts of responsibility in the different maritime fields, and their access to a doctoral programme specially designed for these areas is quite important, as it allows, at the same time, to develop the research aspect within the business sector.

Another consideration is that nowadays there are no nautical studies at the doctoral level within the EU, apart from Spain, although this aspect is being developed. The Department of Nautical Science and Engineering is currently managing different collaboration agreements for the development of future programmes within the EU.

", "objectius"=>"This programme has the following main objectives: to point out new lines of development for research work, not only referring to academic and professional maritime aspects, but also, and perhaps more importantly, in relation with the ship as a key element in sea transport; to facilitate the relationship between the University and other channels of research, either wholly or partially related with maritime activities; and to develop courses with syllabi adapted to both present and future real needs of industry and the maritime sector in the area of new technologies.", "criteris2"=>"Previous acceptance of research works by the tutor or director and posterior approval by the Doctorate Commission.
