The Department of Geotechnical Engineering is actively involved in research in the areas of geotechnical engineering, seismic engineering, geological engineering, groundwater hydrology and the mechanical behaviour of engineering materials. Three of its consolidated research groups have been recognised as Quality Groups by the Catalan government and are devoted to research and technology transfer. It has also signed specific agreements with businesses, public organisations and institutions, and has participated in competitions for projects in Spain and other European countries.

The Department organises national and international conferences, publishes a wealth of material in national and international journals and runs several laboratories that are devoted to soil and rock mechanics, unsaturated soil, topography, geology, hydrogeology and seismology.

The Department has recently stepped up its research activities into terrestrial photogrammetry by using advanced techniques such as GPS. The Department runs the UPC Applied Geophysics Service that primarily works on geological engineering and geophysics applications for civil engineering projects.
