Founded in 1973, the Vallès School of Architecture has been based in Sant Cugat del Vallès since 1991. The new ETSAV building offers modern classrooms, drafting rooms, computer and seminar rooms, a library containing some 14,000 publications, a conference room with a capacity for 300 people, a model-making workshop and a computing centre with a laboratory for the application of IT to architecture.
The School benefits from, maintains and encourages its distinct character from other architecture schools in Spain. Its size, with 1,100 students enrolled and 120 teaching staff members, means that personalised exchanges and supervision are possible and encouraged, and the unique nature of the School’s curricula, with the introduction of the Architecture and Project-Design Workshops, fosters interdisciplinary teaching. In some advanced workshops, students work on real projects through cooperative agreements with town councils and organisations.
The programme offers an extensive choice of optional subjects and its semestral structure facilitates exchanges with other schools of architecture in Spain, Europe and the rest of the world. Finally, mention should be made of coexistence with students from schools of architecture from all over Europe: the ETSAV is one of the UPC schools with the highest number of foreign students (around 10%).
April 2006 saw the opening of the Research and Technology Transfer Centre (CRiTT), which occupies a new annex to the School. Its main objectives are technical innovation in architecture, knowledge dissemination, applied research, the training of research staff and the continuing education of postgraduate students. The building houses the Local Administration Research Centre (CRAL), the Centre for Computer Applications in Architectural and Urban Design (CAIRAT), the Coderch Archive and the Solar Research Centre (CISOL).
The ETSAV facilitates student incorporation into the new European Higher Education Area, with the option since the 2005–2006 academic year to pursue a master's degree in Architectural Technology, taught in conjunction with the ETSAB.
