CLASS-TALK is a multilingual phrasebook in Catalan, Spanish and English including a wide range of university classroom situations. This resource was created by linguists and professors of the Language and Terminology Service and the School of Engineering of Manresa of the UPC-BARCELONA TECH.

The aim of this phrasebook is to help university teaching staff and students to communicate more effectively in the classroom in a language that is not their mother tongue. Within the framework of the EHEA, this resource promotes the use of English as a lingua franca and the use of Catalan as the vernacular language at the UPC.

The content is divided into two sections, A and B. Each section contains about 300 phrases that are grouped according to the situation in which they are used in the classroom. The phrases in Catalan and English have an audio option. Section A contains phrases relevant to delivering a lecture and situations that may arise on a daily basis. The subsections in Section A include “Starting the lecture”, “Delivering the lecture” and “Interacting with students”. Section B contains phrases that are used for communication in more specific situations such as “The first day of the course”, “Exams” and “In the laboratory”.

To use this tool, the first thing you should do is choose the language pair you want to work with and then go to either Section A “The Lecture” or Section B “Specific Situations”. There is a print option in each subsection. You can hear how the phrase is pronounced in Catalan and English by clicking on the loudspeaker symbol at the beginning of each sentence. You can also download the entire subsection and save it in an MP3 file.
