Application for authorization for a long-term residence permit for the purpose of pursuing higher education,in case you came with a tourist visa or other permit from your country of origin.

Who is it for When to apply Where to apply Processing time
Non-European Union citizens who are legal in Spain at the time of request (either with a tourist-visa or any other permit) During your stay: the first 30 days after your arrival in Spain. In-Person: Through appointment

Validity: depends on the duration of the applicant’s studies.

This permit allows non-EU foreign students, who have arrived in Spain without a student visa, to obtain legal residence in the country. The student must submit the required documentation within the first 30 days after their arrival and at least 60 days before the start of the study program; failure to do so within this period will result in the application being filed or denied.*
* Exceptionally, it will be possible to submit the request after the ‘two-month prior to the start of your program’ instruction as long as one of the following exceptions can be proved. (page 2 in the PDF)

The permit allows to work for a maximum of 30h per week as long as the permit on itself remains valid.

Steps for processing

Complete the application for registration in the Central Register of Foreign Nationals “EX-00”.

Rellena la tasa "Modelo 790 código 052" y luego realiza el pago en cualquier entidad bancaria. Asegúrate de que te sellen el justificante de pago.

Request an appointment well in advance at an Immigration Office. To do so, go to the "Immigration/Office Enquiries" section, select your locality under "Offices", and then choose "Appointment Enquiries".

Make sure to bring:

  • Valid passport: Original and photocopy (all pages with personal data or stamps)
  • Application for study permit/extension: Form EX-00
  • Valid health insurance: The insurance must be with full coverage for the entirety of your stay, without co-payments. Additionally, if issued in your country of origin, the document must be translated by a sworn translator.
  • Justificante de medios económicos suficientes: Certificados u otra documentación que lo acredite  (extractos bancarios, becas...)
  • Document justifying the reason for your stay: Certificate of enrollment and proof of payment; if these are not available, a copy of the degree certificate or the admission agreement
  • Criminal record certificate: Issued (within the last 6 months) by the country of origin where you have lived for the last 5 years
  • Proof of payment of the fee: Form 790, code 052

Once you have applied, wait for the decision (1 to 2 months). If it is approved, you will receive a notification and must request an appointment to apply for the TIE card. Keep in mind that the TIE card will only be issued if the permit’s validity spans more than six months. 

  You can legally remain in Spain while the application is being processed.
