The Manel Xifrà Boada Chair - UPC of Research and Innovation in Flexible Packaging Production Technology  was set up as a result of an agreement signed on 10 June 2013 between the Comexi Group, the University of Girona (UdG) and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya • BarcelonaTech (UPC), with the aim of creating a new interuniversity space for knowledge transfer and valorisation that will provide innovative and sustainable solutions for the flexible packaging manufacturing technology sector. The Chair’s activities include training, research and the transfer of research results, including those of the Computer Vision and Robotics research group (UdG) and the Industrial Equipment Design Centre (UPC). The Chair will initially focus on the following lines of work:

  • Research on mechanism and machines, preventive and predictive maintenance, energy analysis of manufacturing processes and manufacturing and assembly design.
  • Training in the design of equipment, including machine design and materials, and technical management.
  • Research projects in technology applied to equipment.
  • Studies on environmental and sustainability topics applied to the manufacture of flexible packing.
  • Talent search and recruitment.
  • Creation of instruments for the dissemination of the Chair’s work.

The Comexi Group is an industrial group that manufactures equipment for the flexible packaging (basically plastics and their derivatives) industry and has longstanding experience in incorporating the work of interdisciplinary university groups, concentrating efforts and establishing networks between businesses and universities.
