The Iberpotash Chair in Sustainable Mining was set up in October 2007 by the Iberpotash company and the UPC's Manresa School of Engineering to promote knowledge of innovation and sustainability topics in mining engineering. It focuses on training, the transfer of research results, advice and scientific dissemination in the field of sustainable mining engineering.
The specific objectives of the Chair are the following:
To contribute to the continuous improvement of potash mining in keeping with sustainability criteria through close collaboration between the University and the company on research, development and innovation; technology transfer and technological support; and the professional training of graduates.
To bring industry and the University closer by working together and training future professionals in the field of sustainable mining engineering.
The Chair's activities are specifically geared towards the following:
Education on safety and the environment.
Research, development and innovation activities on the isotopic composition of sulphur in sulphates from the evaporite series of El Bages.
Technology transfer activities aimed at studying ventilation inside working mines. Simulation in critical situations.
Technological advice on subsidence studies. Assessment and monitoring.
Studies on planning and modelling underground mines.
