Professor Héctor Sanz presented his work on the mechanical and biophysical characterisation of sputum at the 21st Lund Respiratory Network Conference.
Professor Héctor Sanz presented, at the 21st Lund Respiratory Network Conference, his work entitled "From Sputum Color to Sputum Mechanics: a Biophysical Perspective on Bronchiectasis". This work, which reports the results published in two scientific letters in Archivos de Bronconeumología (Top 6 in its field), addresses from a mechanical engineering perspective the rheological characterisation of sputum in bronchiectasis, demonstrating that macroscopic colour correlates with quantifiable physical parameters (mainly the elastic modulus (G’) and solid content), establishing a direct relationship between composition, viscoelastic behaviour (shear-thinning) and material functionality, and proposing a biophysical mapping (% solids–G’) that allows the definition of sputum mechanical domains with potential application as an objective biomarker to optimise mucociliary transport processes, design therapeutic strategies, and monitor treatment response from an engineering-driven approach.
