Introduction

This third year is dedicated to collective housing. The home is the first space that everyone inhabits, and we do so from childhood: it embodies certain values and naturalises particular ways of living. It is also the most repeated programme in the city, and the shape of streets, the scale of neighbourhoods, and the character of public space depend, before anything else, on how housing is designed and grouped together. No other programme has such a simultaneous impact on individual life and on the form of the city.

In collective housing, the repetition, variation, and aggregation of a single unit make it possible to construct complex ensembles from recognisable elements. Learning to design through systems has an interest that goes beyond this specific programme: a system requires distinguishing what remains invariant from what allows for variation, and makes the project itself establish its own rules. Once the rule has been defined, decisions derive from it, and every modification has verifiable consequences for the whole.

The need for housing in Barcelona is becoming increasingly urgent, and there are few spaces left where it is possible to imagine new communities. For this reason, we propose finding new meaning in existing voids and offering new places and ways of living. During this first semester, making use of these spaces means approaching familiar urban fabrics with a perspective that allows us to discover their potential for transformation, while simultaneously responding to current housing needs and to the identity of the place where it is located.
