Students from outside the EU: first "TIE" card for non-EU students

If you are a student from a country not belonging to the European Union (non-EU) and you are going to remain in Spain for more than six months, you must bear in mind that you must extend the validity of your visa by asking for a student card that substitutes your Spanish student visa. The document is called "TIE" card (foreigners identification card). In this card (like an ID), will be shown your "NIE" number (Número de Identificación de Extranjeros, the foreigners identification number). You will have to renew your TIE card every year, before it expires.

  • And AFTER, you have to obtain the TIE card. The procedure is called: first "TIE" card for non-EU students.
At the end of this procedure you obtain a plastic card, the "TIE" (Tarjeta de Identificación de Extranjero, the identification card for foreigners). In this card (like an ID), will be shown your "NIE" number (Número de Identificación de Extranjeros, the foreigners identification number).

Please be careful: you must initiate this procedure during the first 30 days of your stay in Spain.
However it can be considered as initiated at the moment you obtain the appointment. (Though the date of the appointment itself will be for some weeks after.)
