From 12 to 14 May, the UPC’s North Campus will host the 2023 HackUPC, a programming contest in which student teams from all over the world will develop technological projects to respond to challenges posed by companies. 900 participants or ‘hackers’ have signed up.

May 12, 2023

HackUPC is the first and largest student hackathon in Spain. This year’s edition will be held again as a face-to-face event at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC), organised by students from the Barcelona School of Informatics (FIB) and the Barcelona School of Telecommunications Engineering (ETSETB).

The contest will take place in the classroom buildings A3, A4, A5 and A6 on the North Campus (c. Jordi Girona, 31) in Barcelona. Students from all over the world will compete to develop the best technological project to respond to a given challenge in a maximum of 36 hours. Previous challenges included creating technological solutions to fight climate change; designing systems to solve sanitation, maintenance and safety issues in cities; creating virtual assistant apps for social purposes; and designing a chatbot for financial apps.

The event will also feature recreational activities—such as Nerf gun battles and Lego building—and specialist talks to foster collaboration and networking. Hackers will have the chance to interact with sponsor representatives, who will present the challenges and provide their products and experience to help the participants solve them.

At the end of the HackUPC, the judges will choose the best projects, considering innovation, usability and design. They will announce the winners and present the awards.

This edition will be sponsored by technology companies such as Optiver, Bunge, HP, Restb.ai, Capchase, IThink, Vueling and Midokura, among others.
