The UPC ranked the world’s 22nd best in Optics and in the top 100 in Civil Engineering and Computer Science in the 2022 Best Global Universities Rankings

The UPC stands out in Optics as the 22nd best university worldwide, 4th in Europe and the leader in Spain.

In the 8th edition of the Best Global Universities Rankings, the UPC climbs 167 positions and ranks 367th globally and regains the leading position among Spanish technical universities. As for subjects, the University stands out in Optics (22nd in the world), Civil Engineering (57th) and Computer Science (89th).

The Best Global Universities Rankings, also known as the U.S. News rankings, are powered by Clarivate Analytics and published by U.S. News & World Report. In addition to the overall ranking, U.S. News also sorts institutions by 43 subject fields, based on a range of indicators linked to the research and reputation of institutions.

In the 2022 edition of the overall ranking, published in late October 2021, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) is ranked among the 400 best universities in the world, specifically the 367th out of 2,005 institutions analysed. The UPC has climbed 167 positions worldwide, 73 positions in Europe and 6 positions in Spain from the 2021 edition, and regained the leading position among Spanish technical universities.

In the subject classifications, the University stands out in Optics as the 22nd best university worldwide, 4th in Europe and the leader in Spain. In Civil Engineering, the UPC is ranked 57th worldwide, 14th in Europe and 1st in Spain, and in Computer Science it is ranked 89th worldwide, 15th in Europe and as the top Spanish technical university.

In Engineering, the UPC remains the leader among Spanish universities and is ranked 109th worldwide and 25th in Europe. It also remains the top Spanish university in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, in which it is the 109th worldwide and 14th in Europe.

The University is also ranked in Condensed Matter Physics (139th worldwide), Chemical Engineering (154), Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (156), Materials Science (177), Energy and Fuels (201), Mathematics (204), Physical Chemistry (262), Physics (283), Geosciences (305), Chemistry (422), Environment/Ecology (464) and Clinical Medicine (994).

Good results in conferences and reputation in Europe
According to the indicators of the overall ranking, the UPC achieves its highest scores in conference proceedings (51st out of 2,005 universities) and in regional research reputation (107th), which is based on a survey of European academics’ opinion.

As for the subject classifications, the UPC also stands out in regional research reputation, with a 5th position in Computer Science. In the classifications that do not consider reputation indicators, the UPC achieves its highest scores in conference proceedings, in the proportion of internationally co-authored papers and, specifically in Optics, in the number of highly cited papers that are among the top 1% in their respective field, in which it is ranked 15th globally.
