The UPC, the best Spanish university in performance according to the U-Ranking

In the 2021 edition of the U-Ranking the UPC climbs to the top position among Spanish universities in performance together with the UPF and the UC3M. The UPC remains the leader among Spanish universities in teaching and the 3rd in research and innovation. The University is above the Spanish average in almost all the indicators analysed in the ranking and stands out in research and innovation.

The 9th edition of the U-Ranking, an initiative of the BBVA Foundation and the Valencian Institute of Economic Research (Ivie), has been published. It analyses Spanish universities based on a range of indicators on teaching, research and innovation. The U-Ranking publishes two types of classifications: U-Ranking, which sorts universities by performance correcting for the effect of their size in order to make them comparable, and U-Ranking Volume, which sorts universities based on absolute values. The 2021 edition analyses 70 institutions: 48 public universities and 22 private universities.

In terms of performance (U-Ranking), the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) has climbed to the top position among Spanish universities together with the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) and the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M). 

Regarding teaching, the UPC remains the leader in Spain together with seven other universities: the Universidad Carlos III, the University of Navarra, the European University of Madrid, the International University of La Rioja, the University of Nebrija, the Universitat Politècnica de València and the Ramon Llull University. In research and innovation, the UPC remains the 3rd

In terms of overall volume (U-Ranking-Volume), the University is ranked 7th, which is one place higher than in the 2020 edition. In teaching, the UPC remains the 7th together with the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). In research and innovation, it remains the 8th. 

Standing out in research and innovation
In addition to the above classifications, the publishers of the U-Ranking produce a report per university, which contains the graphic representation of the university’s score in each indicator. The UPC is above the Spanish average in almost all the indicators (18 out of 20) and stands out in four indicators related to research and innovation, in which it obtains the maximum score (100): competitive public resources per faculty members with PhD, research staff contracts over budget, European research funds per faculty members with PhD and percentage of publications with international co-authorship.

UPC bachelor’s degrees among the best in Spain
The ranking website also allows to obtain lists by area of study or bachelor’s degree. Based on the default weights applied by the publishers - 56% for teaching and 44% for research and innovation - several UPC bachelor’s degrees are ranked 1st in Spain in their respective areas either alone or together with degrees from other universities.
