Professor Antonio González, who holds a doctoral degree in Computer Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC), teaches at the Barcelona School of Informatics (FIB) and is an internationally recognised researcher in computer architecture, received the 2025 B. Ramakrishna Rau Award from the IEEE Computer Society, the world’s leading organisation for computing professionals, in Seoul (South Korea) on 21 October.
He is the first Spanish researcher to receive this award, which recognises outstanding contributions in the areas of computer microarchitecture and compiler code generation, and which is granted annually to individuals who demonstrate technical excellence, leadership and professional integrity in the field.
González, who is affiliated with the Department of Computer Architecture, leads the Architectures and Compilers research group (ARCO). His work focuses on computer architecture, compilers and parallel processing, with a particular emphasis on processor microarchitecture and code generation to enhance performance, energy efficiency and system reliability.
He was among the first researchers to foresee the importance of reducing the energy consumption of computing systems and has developed numerous innovative techniques to optimise the energy efficiency of key microprocessor components. These contributions have had a significant impact both on academic research and in the technology industry.
The B. Ramakrishna Rau Award was established in memory of B. Ramakrishna Rau, a pioneering researcher in the design of innovative microarchitectures and advanced compiler techniques. The award was presented during the MICRO Conference, one of the leading international events in computer architecture.
