UPC ranked 22nd in the world in Architecture and Built Environment, and 34th in Civil and Structural Engineering

According to the 2018 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, published on 28 February, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) ranks among the best universities in the world in Architecture and Built Environment (22nd, up four places from last year) and Civil Engineering (34th place).

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018, produced by QS Quacquarelli Symonds Limited, rates the top universities in five subject areas, covering 48 subjects. Rankings are based on analysis of four components related to research and the institution’s reputation among academics at other institutions and among employers. Five hundred institutions are rated in subject area rankings, and between 50 and 500 in individual subject rankings.

In Architecture, the UPC ranks eighth in Europe (up one place from last year) and retains its position as the top university in Spain. In Civil and Structural Engineering, the University ranks 8th–9th in Europe and first in Spain. It is also the top-ranked Spanish university in Computer Science and Information Systems, Telecommunications, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Mathematics.

The UPC now ranks among the top hundred universities in the world (51–100 range) in Computer Science and Information Systems, and Art and Design, and remains at this level in Telecommunications, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Mathematics.

The University is also well positioned in other areas, including Engineering – Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing (101–150), Statistics and Operational Research (101–150), Materials Science (151–200), Environmental Sciences (151–200), Chemical Engineering (201–250), Agriculture (201–250), Physics and Astronomy (201–250), and Business and Management Studies (251–300).

As for subject areas, the UPC has gained ground and now ranks 81st in Engineering and Technology, 271st in Natural Sciences, 298th in Arts and Humanities, and 298th in Social Sciences and Management.

Overall, the UPC has improved its international position in nine QS subject rankings and maintained its position in nine others. There is no ranking in which it fares worse this year than last.
