The master's degree in Women’s, Gender and Citizenship Studies (master's degree website), coordinated by the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) and with the UPC as a participant, provides advanced education in the field of women's studies and gender that is directly applicable to today's social problems. Students are trained to serve as equality agents—professionals that will become essential in Spain following the application of the Equality Act, under which all companies with more than 250 employees will be required to draw up an equality plan.

Location

The master’s course is interuniversity and will be taught through classroom and blended learning and on-line. Face-to-face classes will be taught in the Casa de Mar (Barcelona).

Graduates of this master’s degree course will be experts in their field who will be able to develop their career in:

The training of agents for equality, who are relevant figures since the passing of various equality laws and who will soon have an important role to play in businesses, government agencies and associations.
Necessary training for employees in the media, NGOs, educational institutions, and local and state administrations.
Training in research and analysis with a gender perspective offering academic prospects such as researching a doctorate or participating in a variety of programmes or projects that incorporate this perspective.

Generic competencies

Generic competencies are the skills that graduates acquire regardless of the specific course or field of study. The generic competencies established by the UPC are capacity for innovation and entrepreneurship, sustainability and social commitment, knowledge of a foreign language (preferably English), teamwork and proper use of information resources.

Specific competencies

On completion of this master's degree, students will be able to:

Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of women's history.
Demonstrate knowledge of the main theoretical threads that have made up and that make up feminist and gender studies.
Understand what the changes in paradigms of feminism have been and also their causes.
Apply the different theoretical models to the analysis of varied and complex discourses (social, political, legal, philosophical, psychological, educational, etc) from a gender perspective.
Show knowledge of the contributions of different disciplines to the study of the sociocultural configuration of gender and sexuality.
Draw up proposals and plans for equality in an institutional context and design tools for combating gender inequality.

Women, work and public policy path

Analyse women’s relations with educational practices, healthcare practices and the labour economy and/or public policies.
Apply a gender mainstreaming perspective in projects and programmes for businesses or for the public sector.
Show expertise in applying the gender perspective to administrative and social tasks.

Theory, review and culture. The gender perspective path

Understand the ideological basis and show an in-depth knowledge of new proposals for the presentation of gender and sexuality in spheres such as scientific discourse, educational practices, ethical-political practices and the media.
Approach and creatively solve current complex questions of cultural studies and the current situation in the contemporary multicultural context.
Develop their own original contributions in the context of advanced research and/or professional application.
