Barcelona’s Espai Imagina hosts ‘Codi Gaudí’, an immersive experience exploring Antoni Gaudí’s unbuilt projects. Organised by Grup Mediapro and the UPC’s Gaudí Chair, the initiavie combines immersive technology with academic research to offer a new perspective on Gaudí’s work.

'Codi Gaudí, The Untold Experience' opened on 21 September at Espai Imagina, a new venue promoted by MediaPro Xperiences that launches with this first major production. Curated by Galdric Santana, a professor at the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB) and director of Gaudí Chair at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC), which is based at the school, this immersive exhibition invites the public to discover Antoni Gaudí’s creative system and, for the first time, to step inside some of the buildings that the archited imagined but were never actually built.

Far from proposing a new biographical exhibition about the architect, Codi Gaudí aims to understand the "code" that connects all of his work: the geometry, functionality, symbolism and processes that turned Gaudí into one of the most innovative creators in the history of architecture.

The experience features the collaboration of the leading institutions responsible for preserving Gaudí's legacy. The proposal combines academic rigor with virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality and large-scale immersive audiovisual installations, making knowledge that was previously reserved mainly for specialists accessible to the general public.

Step inside the works that Gaudí only imagined

One of the main attractions of the experience is the possibility of virtually visiting some of the projects that Antoni Gaudí designed, but that were never built.

Thanks to years of research on original plans and historical documentation developed by the UPC Gaudí Chair, visitors will be able to digitally access spaces such as the Hotel Attraction in New York, the Monumental Fountain in Plaça Catalunya, the Franciscan Missions in Tangier, or the Auditorium (Paranimf) of the University of Barcelona, reconstructed using scientific criteria based on preserved documentation.

Rediscover Gaudí through science, technology and innovation

The experience focuses on Gaudí's role as a researcher, inventor and innovator.

The tour shows how the architect used light to study the behavior of sound, built scale models to understand impossible structures, or developed his own tools to solve architectural problems decades before the arrival of computers or computer-aided design software.

Through immersive technologies, visitors can manipulate geometric shapes, understand engineering concepts and discover how Gaudí transformed complex ideas into buildings capable of integrating nature, functionality and beauty.

The experience is part of the official program of the Gaudí Year and has been declared an Event of Exceptional Public Interest by the Ministry of Culture and Finance, a recognition that endorses its scientific rigor and cultural relevance. The project also stands out for the exceptional milestone of having brought together the participation of the main institutions linked to Gaudí's heritage: the Construction Board of the Expiatory Temple of the Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló, Casa Vicens, La Pedrera, El Capricho, Teresian College, Torre Bellesguard, Casa Botines, Episcopal Palace of Astorga, Cathedral of Mallorca, Palau Güell, Güell Pavilions, Crypt of the Colònia Güell, Park Güell and Nau Gaudí.

Following its premiere in Barcelona and due to strong international interest, the exhibition is scheduled to begin a tour of other cities during 2027, including Madrid, Hong Kong, Montreal and Shanghai.

Technology at the service of outreach

'Codi Gaudí, The Untold Experience' combines exhibition spaces, immersive audiovisual installations, virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality to facilitate the understanding of architectural and scientific concepts.

Among its main attractions is a large panoramic audiovisual dedicated to Gaudí's entire body of work, as well as several interactive spaces where visitors can experiment with the geometric principles that revolutionized modern architecture.

Espai Imagina: a new cultural landmark in Barcelona

With this first production, Espai Imagina launches its programming as a new space dedicated to cultural leisure experiences. Driven by Grup Mediapro, the project was born out of the desire to combine heritage, science, art and technology through a stable program that will include new in-house productions and international projects, consolidating itself as a new meeting point for culture and innovation in Barcelona.
