Daniel Crespo, who is a full professor of Physics, will be the rector of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) for the next four years, according to final results of the voting that took place online from 14 to 19 May. Daniel Crespo won 50,67% of the weighted votes (2.954), while Francesc Torres obtained 49,33% (2.879).

On May 25, Daniel Crespo was proclaimed candidate elected to the rectorial election of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC). Of the 6.386 votes cast, representing 20,68% of the university community, 556 were blank, according to the final results of this election for the post of rector, in which voting was conducted online for the first time ever.

The votes were broken down as follows: 79,37% of the permanent teaching and research staff with PhDs, 21,47% of other teaching and research staff, 13,9% of the bachelor’s and master’s students and 68,41% of the administrative and service staff.

Permanent teaching and research staff with PhDs have given Daniel Crespo 21,10% of the weighted votes (1.230,02) and Francesc Torres 29,90% (1.743,28). Other teaching and research staff have given Daniel Crespo 7,06 % of the weighted votes (411,59) and Francesc Torres 6,94% (404,6).

Bachelor’s and master’s degree students have given Daniel Crespo 15,46% of the weighted votes (901,37) and Francesc Torres 8,54% (497,83). Administrative and service staff have given Daniel Crespo 7,05% of the weighted votes (410,86) and Francesc Torres 3,95% (230,44).

A total of 30.876 members of the university community were called to vote. Bachelor’s and master’s degree students are the largest sector, which is composed of 24,278 people and has a weighting coefficient of 0.24.

The sector with the greatest power is the PDI-A. It is made up of 1,309 permanent teaching and research staff with PhDs. It has a weighting coefficient of 0.51. The PDI-B sector is composed of 3,507 other teaching staff and has a weighting coefficient of 0.14. The administrative and service staff sector is made up of 1,782 people and has a weighting coefficient of 0.11.

The candidate
The professor Daniel Crespo presented his candidature under the slogan Building the UPC. His campaign was based on promoting a university that advances towards the future using dialogue and negotiation.

Daniel Crespo’s team is composed of professors Miquel Soriano, Montserrat Pardàs, Climent Molins, Lourdes Reig, Jordi Ros, Núria Pla, Àlvar Vinacua, Fatiha Nejjari Akhi-elarab, Jordi Cortadella, Josefina Antonijuan and Ana B. Cortinas (PAS).

Daniel Crespo, from the Department of Applied Physics, has been teaching at the UPC since 1987 and became a full professor of Physics in 2010. From age 14 to 25, he combined studies and working in the private sector. He has a degree in Physics from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (1984) and a doctoral degree from the UPC (1994). His line of research is focused on the mechanical properties, the physical stability (relaxation and crystallisation processes) and the chemical stability (corrosion resistance) of amorphous metals.
