ShanghaiRanking’s 2023 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) was published on 27 October. It lists the world’s top institutions in 55 subjects across Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences. Institutions’ performance is measured based on up to five indicators: research output, research influence, research quality, international collaboration and awards received by teaching and research staff.

In the latest edition of the ranking, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) is listed among the world’s top 100 universities in Atmospheric Science (51-75 band) and Civil Engineering (76-100 band). It also stands out in Instruments Science and Technology (101-150 band) and in the following four fields (151-200 band): Water Resources, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Physics and Oceanography. For the first time, the University is ranked in Human Biological Sciences (401-500 band in the world and 11-15 band in Spain).

The UPC is the leader or co-leader among Spanish universities in five fields: Atmospheric Science, Instruments Science and Technology, Water Resources, Energy Science and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

With regard to indicators, the UPC has once again achieved its highest scores in international collaboration, which evaluates the ratio of papers with international co-authorship to the total number of publications by category. The University also stands out in normalised impact—evaluated in the last four editions—which is the ratio of citations of papers published to the average citations of papers by category, period and type of journal publication.
