The UPC, among the world’s top 30 universities in Civil and Structural Engineering and Architecture and Built Environment

The UPC ranks among the world’s top 100 universities in the subjects Civil and Structural Engineering (23rd), Architecture and Built Environment (29th), Art and Design, Telecommunications, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering (51-100 band), as well as in the broad subject area Engineering and Technology (85th), in the 2019 QS World University Rankings by Subject.

The 2019 QS World University Rankings by Subject, published by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, rates the world’s top universities in five broad subject areas and 48 subjects and analyses four indicators related to research impact and the institution’s reputation among academics at other institutions and among employers. They rank 500 universities in the broad subject areas and between 50 and 500 in the subjects.

In the 2019 rankings, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) stands out in the subject Civil and Structural Engineering, for which it is ranked 23rd in the world (climbing 11 positions since the previous edition), 8th in Europe and 1st in Spain. In the subject Architecture and Built Environment, the University is ranked 29th in the world, 11th in Europe and 1st in Spain.

In the broad subject area Engineering and Technology, the University ranks 85th in the world, 22nd-23rd in Europe and 1st in Spain. The UPC is also among the top 100 universities in the world (51-100 band) in Art and Design, Telecommunications, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering. The UPC is also the top university in Spain in Art and Design, Computer Science and Information Systems, Telecommunications, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics, and Statistics and Operational Research.

The University is also well positioned globally in other subjects, including Computer Science and Information Systems, Mathematics, and Statistics and Operational Research (101-150 band), Environmental Sciences and Materials Science (151-200 band), Chemical Engineering (201-250 band) and Physics and Astronomy and Business and Management (301-350 band).
 
The UPC has high scores in “Research citations per paper” and “Employer reputation”
As for the set of indicators analysed, if we consider the scores in all the categories, the UPC has the highest scores in “Research citations per paper”, followed by “Employer reputation”, “h-index” and “Academic reputation”. The indicators that have seen the greatest increase in the last year are “h-index” and “Research citations per paper”, which have both improved in 11 out of 16 rankings.
