The UPC is among the world’s top 50 in the SDG Climate Action, according to the THE Impact Rankings

In the latest edition of the THE Impact Rankings—which assess the impact of universities in achieving the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—the UPC is ranked the world’s 38th in Climate Action (SDG 13), climbing 33 positions from the previous edition.

In the 2023 edition of THE Impact Rakings, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) has provided data for the following SDGs: Good Health and Well-Being (SDG 3), Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7), Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9), Climate Action (SDG 13), Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (SDG 16) and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17).

As in previous years, the UPC has achieved its best score in Climate Action (SDG 13), in which it has climbed to the world’s top 50, being ranked 38th out of 735 participating universities. Its second best score was in Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7), in which it has been ranked in the 101-200 band out of 812 universities.

THE Impact Rankings assesses universities against SDG 13 based on a series of indicators grouped into four main dimensions. The UPC obtained its best score in the environmental education measures dimension: 96.7 out of 100. This dimension considers the existence of education campaigns on climate change, a climate action plan and climate-related collaboration with governments and NGOs.

The other three dimensions under SDG 13 are research on climate action, which considers the proportion of a university’s publications in top 10% journals according to CiteScore on Scopus, the normalised citation impact and the number of publications; low-carbon energy use, which measures the amount of low-carbon energy used and the proportion of low-carbon sources; and commitment to carbon neutral university, which requires reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

A committed university

The UPC’s excellent scores are the result of the environmental policies in place since 1994, which are currently part of the UPC strategy on climate action and the 2030 UPC Campus Sustainability Plan. In this framework, the University has performed several actions to reduce emissions (see the UPC Sostenible website) and adapt its activities to the new climate conditions.

UPC research projects are making important contributions in Climate Action (SDG 13) and Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7).
