Since 2009, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) has used Twitter (now X) for sharing institutional content primarily through its main account @la_UPC, which has reached 36,500 followers. However, in light of changes in the platform’s management and the lack of control over information accuracy, the Governing Council approved the decision to cease activity on X for all institutional UPC profiles. Approved on 19 February, the decision aligns with similar moves by other European academic and scientific institutions.

Rector Daniel Crespo explained that the University made this decision due to the platform’s “unacceptable shift in its role as a social network and communication tool”. “We are leaving X because its management conflicts with the UPC’s principles and values, which are rooted in freedom of expression, respect, ethics and social responsibility,” he added.

In April 2022, Twitter changed ownership, later rebranding as X and implementing shifts in content accuracy policies. According to the Governing Council, these changes have caused the platform to move away from democratic values and abandon its commitment to information accuracy and quality, resulting in a management approach that lacks fundamental ethical standards. These developments contradict the UPC’s core principles and values, which include truthful education, freedom, respect, ethics and social responsibility. The decision to stop posting on X applies to all units and groups with institutional profiles linked to the UPC.

At the same time, the University will maintain and strengthen its presence on other social networks. In fact, since January, the UPC has had an institutional profile on Bluesky, where it shares updates on institutional activities, as well as its teaching, research and innovation initiatives, creating and fostering a new space for exchange
and dialogue.

The UPC is also active on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok i YouTube, where it shares the University’s news and information on its services and on research, knowledge transfer and teaching activities. The UPC uses these channels to showcase its values and brand, reinforcing its position as a leading public university in engineering, architecture, science and technology, while also fostering engagement and community.
