Unite! creates a network of doctoral programmes to boost green hydrogen research in Europe

The Unite! alliance has created a network of doctoral programmes to explore the integration of hydrogen in the energy sector from the expertise of each university. Coordinated by the UPC and funded through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the Unite! Energy project is the seed of the alliance’s future doctoral school. The first 12 PhD positions have already been announced.

The sixth edition of the THE Impact Rankings has been published. The rankings assess the impact of universities’ contributions to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UPC is ranked the world’s 58th for the SDG 13 Climate Action and in the 101-200 band for the SDG 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, and the SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Two UPC NanoSat Lab missions, ready to be launched into space

Students from the UPC’s NanoSat Lab travelled to Berlin and successfully completed the final integration of the 3Cat-4 nanosatellite into the Exolaunch deployer that will bring it to space on the European launcher Ariane 6 maiden flight, scheduled for next July 9. A few weeks earlier, another team at the same laboratory completed the RITA/³Cat-6 payload, which will launch aboard the AlAinSat-1 satellite of the National Space Science and Technology Center (NSSTC) at the United Arab Emirates University.

Researchers from the UPC’s research group Innovation in Materials and Molecular Engineering - Biomaterials for Regenerative Therapies (IMEM-BRT) are working on a thermosensitive hydrogel with several applications, such as the desalination of seawater with solar radiation and the creation of new biomedical adhesives for semi-invasive therapies and for medical diagnosis.

An oceanographic campaign validates innovative technologies for managing marine ecosystems

The UPC’s Technological Development Centre for Remote Acquisition and Data Processing Systems (SARTI) has participated in a campaign to test novel technologies to enable the deployment of stations and vehicles for monitoring the marine environment and providing real-time data. Experiments were conducted off the Catalan coast up to 350 metres deep as part of the PLOME project.

Artificial intelligence, 5G-6G, big data, robotics, cybersecurity, computers and IoT protocols and 3D and 4D printing are the technologies with the most research groups at the UPC, according to the study 'Analysis, map and detection of Deep Tech areas and technologies'. Prepared with its own methodology within the framework of the Fractus-UPC Deep Tech Hub, the study detects the end of 16 technologies in which 50% of the University's research groups are distributed, depending on the social impact or industrial escalation.

The business incubation centre ESA BIC Barcelona of the European Space Agency has selected six space tech start-ups to be part of the incubation programme. The selected companies will receive 50,000 euros to develop their product or service and will have up to two years of incubation from now on. Promoted by the Government of Catalonia as part of the NewSpace Strategy, and also by the UPC and the Mediterranean Technology Park, the programme will incubate up to 18 companies in three years.
