News master's degree 2017-2018
For the 2017-2018 academic year, the UPC plans to offer three new master's degrees:
Master's degree in Unmanned Aerial Systems Engineering (Drones)
This master's degree offers specialised training in the applications of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones, including technical aspects, such as platforms and instruments, and legal and economic aspects, such as regulations and business opportunities. You will learn to devise new applications for drones; to choose the most suitable platforms for these applications; to integrate the equipment needed for a mission, such as sensors and cameras, into the platforms and to develop any other additional components, such as hardware and software, needed for integration; and finally, to turn these applications into feasible and profitable businesses. You will learn all of the above while working in a company or research group on a project that makes up 75% of the master's degree.
Master's degree in Naval and Ocean Engineering
This master's degree qualifies you to practise the regulated profession of naval and ocean engineer. It gives you the knowledge you need to design, build, maintain and inspect ships and vessels of all kinds, as well as platforms and devices for the use of ocean resources. You will also be trained in the management and supervision of maritime businesses.
Naval and ocean engineers are professionals who have the ability to conceive and develop technical solutions for the maritime transport of goods and people that are economically and environmentally sound and for the exploitation of ocean and seabed resources (fish, energy, minerals, etc.) and the appropriate use of marine habitats and maritime defence and security systems.
You can take one of the following specialisations:
Yacht and Pleasure craft DesignMany of the recent scientific advances in the construction of ships and vessels spring from innovations in yacht and boat racing. In this specialisation students get to know and further their knowledge of the design and construction requirements for these vessels, so that as future professionals they are able to continue innovating in this area.
Oceanic EnergiesMany technologies are being developed for obtaining energy from the marine environment and many could be significant sources of energy in the future, from offshore wind farms to more complex experimental systems such as oscillating water columns and wave energy converters. In this specialisation students gain the knowledge they need to understand and develop these systems for harvesting energy, as well as to influence the uptake of these technologies in the future.
Master's degree in Advanced Studies in Design-Barcelona (MBDesign)
This is a multidisciplinary master's degree in which creativity, innovation and research are applied as tools for knowledge and for proposing the designs of the future. It is conceived from a comprehensive, wide-ranging and cross-disciplinary perspective that is characteristic of design in Barcelona, which has become an international benchmark in recent decades. Its approach is propositional: it contributes new views on theory, participatory network strategies and the most innovative trends in new product design. Teaching takes place in settings such as design workshops, projects on various topics, materials and technology research laboratories, collaborative work and digital manufacturing laboratories.
The master's degree consists of a compulsory, cross-disciplinary stage of 15 ECTS credits and an optional stage of 30 ECTS credits that includes five specialisations:
- Contemporary Design (taught in English)
- Design, Innovation and Technology
- Industrial Design Engineering
- Art Direction in Design
- Design Research (a cross-disciplinary specialisation that covers the other four)
