In its last meeting, the Governing Council of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) approved the creation of the Institute of Mathematics of the UPC-BarcelonaTech (IMTech) to enhance the visibility and importance of research conducted at the University in this area of knowledge—it is, after all, the Spanish institution with the highest scientific output in mathematics and related areas—and to foster the participation in competitive calls for fundraising and in the REDIUM network (Spanish Network of University Institutes of Mathematics).

The IMTech, which will be located at the UPC’s School of Mathematics and Statistics, will also develop a scientific policy in mathematics for recruiting talent, promoting interdisciplinarity, boosting knowledge transfer and supporting quality research. The Institute will structure services given to UPC researchers in these fields by providing support in managing international and visiting research staff, organising conferences, disseminating research results and preparing and monitoring projects. Last but not least, the Institute will promote the existing master’s and doctoral programmes.

The IMTech will liaise with other mathematical research organisations in Catalonia, such as the Catalan Centre for Research in Mathematics (CRM), the Institute of Mathematics of the University of Barcelona (IMUB) and, in particular, the Barcelona Graduate School of Mathematics (BGSMath)—promoted by the UPC among others—and other institutions for frontier research in mathematics.

Today, the UPC community of researchers in mathematics and related areas brings together about 300 people, with a high percentage of international teaching and research staff, doctoral students and research support staff. The UPC is the Spanish university with the largest number of publications and doctoral theses defended and publications in mathematical programmes. It also stands out in international rankings, such as the QS World University Rankings by Subject and the Leiden Ranking.
