In the fifth edition of the Best Global Universities Rankings, also known as the US News Rankings, the UPC is 36th in the world in Computer Science and 60th in Engineering. In the global ranking, the UPC is among the top 500 in the world.

The UPC climbs six positions, so that it now ranks 81st in Europe and 1st among technical universities in Spain in the 2019 Europe’s Most Innovative Universities ranking drawn up by Reuters. The ranking lists the top 100 European universities that contribute the most to progress in science and technological innovation and to the promotion of global economic development.

The UPC launches #looopers, a science outreach series on YouTube
“Nanoquè? Nanosatèl·lits!” (Nano-what? Nanosatellites!) is the first video in the series that the UPC has launched on its YouTube channel. Teaching and research staff and students have collaborated to reach out to young people and encourage them to take up STEAM vocations.

Quantum mechanics explains how superfluid helium films grow in carbon nanotubes
Research by an international team of researchers led by scientists from the ICFO, with the participation of Jordi Boronat, a researcher at the UPC’s Department of Physics, reports on the controlled, layer-by-layer growth process of superfluid helium on the surface of carbon nanotubes. The experiment opens the door to studying new phenomena at the nanoscopic scale and, in particular, in topological phase transitions.

The UPC maintains its position among the 150 best young universities in the world
In the Times Higher Education’s 2019 Young University Rankings, the UPC maintains its position among the 150 best young universities in the world (101-150 band) and ranks in the 58-82 band in Europe. It is the top technical university in Spain.

Microgravity does not affect frozen sperm according to a study by Dexeus Mujer in collaboration with the UPC
A study conducted by Dexeus Mujer in collaboration with the UPC reveals that gravity conditions outside the Earth do not affect frozen human sperm. The results of this study were reported in late June at the 35th Annual Meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology held in Vienna.

UPC performing well in the latest international rankings
In the 2019 edition of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, the UPC remains in the 601-700 range—in which it has been ranked since 2017—in the Top 1000 list. In the recently published 2019-2020 CWUR World University Rankings, the UPC ranks 443rd out of nearly 20,000 universities analysed around the world. Additionally, in the SIR Iber ranking it takes 16th place among the best Ibero-American universities. In the Ranking Web of Universities (Webometrics), the UPC climbs from the 297th to the 275th place worldwide and is the top Spanish technical university.

European grants for excellent research awarded to Ariadna Quattoni, from the Department of Computer Science, and Xavier Oliver, from the UPC-CIMNE
The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded a Starting Grant to Ariadna Quattoni, a researcher at the Department of Computer Science, to develop a machine learning project, and a Proof of Concept grant to Xavier Oliver, a professor and researcher at the CIMNE, to launch a computational design project. In addition, researchers Dmitri Efetov, from the ICFO, and Loris Rizzello, from the IBEC, which are UPC-affiliated institutes, will receive Starting Grants to carry out cutting-edge research in the fields of Physical and Engineering Sciences and Life Sciences, respectively.

A researcher from the UPC’s ESEIAAT leads a European project to create four advanced support centres for the textile industry in Morocco and Jordan
Mònica Ardanuy, a professor of textile engineering at the Terrassa School of Industrial, Aerospace and Audiovisual Engineering (ESEIAAT) and a researcher in the TECTEX research group at the UPC, is leading the European project FOSTEX, which aims to create four advanced support centres for the textile industry in Moroccan and Jordanian universities. FOSTEX received one million euros in funding from the European Commission and aims to have these centres operational by 2022.

In the 2019 edition of the Taiwan Ranking, the UPC ranks among the world’s 500 best universities and 138th in the field of Engineering, in which it remains the leader among Spanish universities. The University is also listed among the world’s top 100 in four subjects: Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Computer Science.

The UPC has conferred an honorary doctoral degree on the Italian mathematician Alessio Figalli
The Italian mathematician Alessio Figalli, who received a 2018 Fields Medal, has been awarded an honorary doctoral degree by the UPC. He is a professor at ETH Zurich and one of the most outstanding mathematicians worldwide today. The Governing Council approved the award, which was proposed by the School of Mathematics and Statistics (FME), on 24 May. The 'honoris causa' award has taken place on Friday 22 November at 11.30 a.m in the auditorium of the Vèrtex building, in Barcelona, and in live on UPCtv.

Mobile-recycling bacteria star in the new #looopers episode featuring researcher Toni Dorado
Microorganisms found in wastewater are capable of separating metals from electronic waste through a process known as bioleaching, which is cheaper and cleaner than traditional processes and helps recover precious metals such as gold, silver and copper. Researchers from the UPC and ICFO unveil the finite-temperature thermodynamics of a Bose gas
A team of researchers from the UPC’s Department of Physics and the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) develop a new theory to explain the finite temperature properties of bosons in one dimension. The research has been published in the journal Physical Review Research and opens the door to an in-depth understanding of the microscopic nature of Bose gases, which are key for developing future quantum technologies.

The UPC helps to define a new professional profile for the European textile sector
A team of researchers from the Terrassa Institute of Textile Research and Industrial Cooperation (INTEXTER) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) have updated the professional technical profile needed by the European textile sector in the framework of the European project Skills4Smart TCLF Industries 2030. The project, which has received four million euros in funding from the Erasmus+ programme, involves 22 entities from nine European countries.

The UPCommons open knowledge portal is listed among the world’s top 30 document repositories, 10th in Europe and 1st in Spain in the latest edition of the Transparent Ranking of repositories. In the ranking of institutional repositories, it climbs to the 19th place worldwide and the 6th place in Europe.

The UPC, among the world’s top 25 in Architecture and Civil Engineering and among the top 100 in Engineering and Technology
The UPC ranks higher in the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings (WUR) by Subject. It is now ranked the world’s 21st in the subject Architecture (climbing 8 positions) and in the broad subject area Engineering and Technology it has climbed from 85th place in the 2019 edition to 76th place this year. The University is also ranked as one of the world’s top 25 universities in the subject Civil and Structural Engineering, remaining the world’s 23rd.

The UPC is contributing to the fight against COVID-19 with several research projects and 3D printing of medical supplies
In response to the COVID-19 health emergency, UPC research groups and centres are working on several scientific projects to tackle the spread of the virus. Additionally, a number of professors, researchers and students are sharing their knowledge and 3D-printing equipment to make masks, respirators and face shields for hospitals.

It was the largest beam tested to rupture in a European laboratory
On 29 January, the construction laboratory of the Center for Technological Innovation in Construction and Civil Engineering (CITEEC) conducted a controlled rupture test on a beam 12 meters long, 2 meters wide and 24 centimetres thick that weighed 14 tonnes. It was the largest beam tested to rupture in a European laboratory. The experiment was part of the HORVITAL project, coordinated by the UPC.

The percentage of COVID-19 cases diagnosed in Spain rises to nearly 10% of the population infected
A multidisciplinary research group of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) and the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) has analysed the diagnostic delay between the development of symptoms of COVID-19 and the registration of a positive case in ten countries in the European Union. From this they have been able to calculate the percentage of cases that each country is capable of detecting with respect to the total number of infections and to give a more accurate figure for the real number of cases of COVID-19.

UPC researchers create an app to monitor outings with children during the lockdown
The Data Management Group (DAMA-UPC) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) and the spin-off Sparsity have developed the app SafeWalkNearby to help to monitor the distance and the duration of outings with children under 14 to public spaces during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

Smallest cavity for light created by graphene plasmons
Researchers from the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) –a research institute affiliated to the UPC—, MIT, Duke University, Paris-Saclay University and the Universidade do Minho report on the smallest cavities ever achieved for infrared light using graphene and metallic cubes of nanometric size. The study was published in Science.
