A device with mobile games and remote medical monitoring for at-home pelvic floor rehabilitation As part of the European WOMEN-UP project, in September the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona (Spain), along with the Academic Medical Center (the Netherlands) and Kuopio University Hospital (Finland), will carry out the clinical trial of a system designed to improve pelvic floor muscle training, a recommended treatment to prevent or treat urinary incontinence. This technological solution incorporates serious games for mobile phones that are driven by muscle movement and remote medical monitoring through a web platform.

UPC among world’s thirty best universities in Architecture and top forty in Civil and Structural Engineering The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) ranks among the best thirty universities in the world in Architecture (26th) and among the best forty in Civil and Structural Engineering (34th) according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017, published on 8 March. It is also among the top hundred in Telecommunications, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Mathematics (51-100 range).

Students participants in the UPC Space Programme at the Terrassa School of Industrial, Aerospace and Audiovisual Engineering (ESEIAAT), UPC students launch balloon into stratosphere with drawings made by children at Sant Joan de Déu Hospital On Saturday, 4 March at 11 a.m. local time, a team of 20 students of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) launched a high-altitude balloon from Seròs, in the Catalan province of Lleida. On board was a very special payload: 21 drawings made by children being treated at Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Barcelona. The balloon, which reached an altitude of over 25,000 m, was equipped with three cameras that took photographs of works created by the children, with the curve of the earth, the stars and the sun as a backdrop. Secondary school students in Seròs (in the county of Segrià) attended the launch, and the children and their families were able to follow the progress of the mission live at the hospital.

UPC patents system for cardiovascular pre-diagnosis—in under a minute—based on contact with user’s hands or feet The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) has patented an affordable, easy-to-use electrocardiograph that can provide a cardiovascular pre-diagnosis in less than a minute. It is the first system to measure both the electrical activity of the heart (electrocardiogram) and its mechanical activity (arterial pulse wave) based on data collected via two metal sensors in contact with the user’s hands or feet. The prototype has already been granted patents in Spain, the United States and China, and applications have also been filed in Europe, Japan, Korea and India. The system will be presented next week at the Mobile World Congress, along with other projects that reflect the University’s technological capabilities.
